Color Blocking Turned into Knitting Pattern

Some of you may know that I used to be an avid knitter before I became a paper crafter.  That was about 14 years ago.  On doctor’s orders, I had to stop knitting because I sustained a painful nerve injury in my hand and tendonitis in my wrist.  Stopping was hard, but luckily, I had just begun taking card making classes around that same time.  The rest, as some say, is history and fate.

Every once in a while, I take out the dusty knitting needles and knit up a little project.  When I was an avid knitter, I used to change or make up my own patterns.  I guess designing is in my DNA.  This past summer, I was visiting a local yarn store with my mom and aunt and fell in love with a very soft cotton yarn.  I choose two blue and one sand color to make a scarf to match my winter jacket.

I looked around to see if I could find a color block pattern and didn’t see one I loved.  So, I decided to make my own.  This is where I combined my paper crafting talent with knitting talent.  I made my own pattern with strips of paper!  I figured out how many stitches per inch and approximate yardage and created a to-scale pattern with inch blocks.

I figured out 30 knitted rows equaled one inch of my pattern.  So I was able to knit the appropriate rows to match my paper mock up.  I was really pleased!  I had a bit more yarn left over after I finished my “pattern” so I repeated some blocks until the yarn was all used.

It’s so cozy, I hate to take it off!  Just a little side story from my usual card making.
