Two weeks ago (can you believe it was two weeks – sometimes it feels like yesterday and sometimes it feels like two months), the Inauguration happened. I’m not going to get into politics here, but amid the speeches, the songs, prayers and poems, there was fashion. I’m not talking pant suits, hats, masks or ties, I’m talking real American fashion. Hand knit mittens. You already know what happened with those mittens, so I’m not going to post any memes here. What I did was put my own creativity to work and created Bernie Mitten Cards.
I don’t have the Triangle Dies (those would have worked beautifully) so I used what I have. Early Espresso card base and Basic Black strip (5-1/2″ x 1-1/2″). I cut 5 White & 5 Crumb Cake rectangles from my Stitched Rectangle dies (the thinnest die) and cut them in half. You could also cut rectangles 2-1/2″ x 1/2″ and cut them those half. The + is from the Playful Alphabet dies.
I used Multipurpose Liquid Glue (my adhesive of choice) to glue everything down and cut the hanging over pieces with my scissors. I included a 5-1/2″ x 1/2″ strip of Black on the top and a 3/4″ strip of Black on the bottom.
The first card (above) is pretty close to the pattern of Bernie’s mittens. This following card is more inspired by them. I used the smallest square die of the Stitched Shapes Dies, or you could cut 1-1/4″ squares if you don’t have the dies. I measured where the center was and worked outwards. The Black strip is 2″ wide. I also introduced another brown, 1/2″ strips of Cinnamon Cider and embossed them with the Subtle Embossing Folder to give it more of a textile feel.
This last card is also inspired by his mittens, but both sides of the mittens. Did you notice his mittens had two sections on the inside? Felted blue on the inner top and knitted two tone teal on the lower bottom. I combined the three shapes for this one – rectangles, squares and the + sign. I also used the Subtle Embossing folder for sections and ran them through the machine twice in both directions to give it more texture. Colors for this one are Misty Moonlight base, Early Espresso, White, Crumb Cake, Pretty Peacock and Just Jade. These cards were fun to make and I hope they show you that you can be inspired by all sorts of things to create color combinations, textures and patterns.
Inspiration can come from anywhere! Create these cards and send them to either your friends with a little humor, or use them as masculine cards.
